Studies were made in Belém, Pará, on the duration of the
toxic effects of residual DDT on Anopheles darlingi. Wooden walls
were sprayed with DDT in kerosene solution at 5%, leaving a residue
of 2.09gm per square meter. It was found that toxic effects of the
insecticide disappeared completely following the eighth month of application.
Any observations referring to mortality caused by DDT in
mosquitoes maintained without feeding should be made from the 8th to
the 24th hour after capture; in the 48th hour, the percentage of deaths
from natural causes is very high.
